About this video:
Are you looking for a Funeral Home in Darby Township PA? The Claude J. Edney Funeral Home was founded in 1952 by Claude J. Edney Sr., in Darby Township, PA. The Claude J. Edney Funeral Home Inc. is an historical landmark in Delaware County. At that time, African-Americans were not allowed grave burials nor funerals from Caucasian-Americans in the past, so the essential tasks of honouring loved ones in African-American communities was upheld by the young Claude J. Edney Sr. and his family.
Edney Sr. was educated at the H.E. Dolan College of Embalming and Sanitary Science in Philadelphia, PA. He then began servicing families and hosting funerals in his small three bedroom house on Sharon Avenue in Darby Township. He also worked at the local post office, while servicing the needs of the community and he eventually began a legacy that would carry the community out of the dark ages of racism. Even during a time of so much racial discomfort, Edney Sr. believed in equal opportunity and held a strict non-discriminatory policy when it came to the descent of his clientele. Although he was a Christian man, Edney Sr. opened his funeral home to all faiths, religions, and walks of life. He believed his work was from the Lord and for the Lord. He successfully ran the Claude J. Edney Funeral Home Inc. until he was called to rest in 1987.
A new legacy was created when in 1978 the son Claude J. Edney Jr., decided to continue the legacy left by his father. After completing his bachelors degree at Howard University class of 1972, he graduated from the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science class of 1976. Edney Jr. began to not only carry on the business but also modernize and upscale the business to what it is today. The Claude J. Edney Funeral Home Inc, has come a long way since the days of servicing in the living room to an elegant parlor that still stands on the grounds of history today. The Claude J. Edney Funeral Home, continues to service families from all faiths and walks of life to this day, and with the guidance of Edney Jr., the pursuit of excellence will always be the motivation and nature of the business.
